SEC launches solicitation for 290MW of small-scale renewable source projects

Southern California Edison (SCE) has launched the fifth round of solicitation for small-scale renewable source projects including solar, wind, geothermal and biomass.

The company aims to acquire up to 290MW from smaller-scale renewable projects through a Renewable Auction Mechanism (RAM).

The request for offers, being conducted through RAM, will be available for renewable electric energy-generating facilities between 3 and 20MW.

"The previous solicitations have been successful in encouraging small-scale renewable development and once operational, these projects will add to the portfolio of clean energy that we provide to our customers," SCE Contract Origination principal manager Tony Frontino said.

"RAM aims to lower transaction costs and promote the development of small-scale, system-wide renewable distributed generation."

Through four previous auctions, the utility has acquired 530MW of renewable power for its customers.

Adopted by the California Public Utilities Commission in December 2010, RAM aims to lower transaction costs and promote the development of small-scale, system-wide renewable distributed generation.

RAM also boosts resource development, which can use existing transmission and distribution infrastructure, promote competition and produce the lowest costs for customers while contributing to the state's renewables goals of 33% by 2020.

Currently SCE delivers 22% of the power to its customers through renewable sources when compared to the overall California power mix of 15% renewables.

In 2013, SCE provided its customers with 1,037GWh of solar energy, which is equivalent of removing 715,064kg of carbon dioxide and enough electricity to power 98,358 homes for a year.
