ABB secures substation order from Hydro One Networks in Canada

Power and automation group ABB has secured a major substation order from Hydro One Networks.

The supply deal includes an indoor gas-insulated switchgear substation, an outdoor switchyard with air-insulated switchgear, as well as associated transmission infrastructure.

New substation will replace an existing old installation and will serve Canada's largest city, Toronto. The substations will connect the existing Portlands Energy Center generation station and enhance grid reliability.

The project is scheduled to be complete by 2013 and the value of the contract has not yet been disclosed.

Hydro One Networks owns and operates 96% of Ontario's transmission network. It has 280 transmission substations, a distribution system spanning around 75% of the province, with 1,010 distribution substations and 26 facilities that interconnect the transmission grid with neighbouring provinces to enable power trading.

The news follows ABB's announcement that it had secured an order worth more than $250m from the Saudi Electricity Company to build new substations and reinforce existing ones in Saudi Arabia.
