Power and automation technology group ABB will invest more than $400m to double the capacity of its manufacturing facility for high-voltage cables in Karlskrona, Sweden.
The expansion will be carried out in phases, and includes the construction of new buildings and the installation of additional manufacturing lines at the existing plant.
ABB power systems division head Peter Leupp said that the investment will help the company to boost its production capacity and meet growing demand for high-voltage subsea power cables.
"Subsea cables play an integral part in the efficient and reliable transmission of electricity for a range of applications, such as inter-connectors between countries, offshore wind connections and power supply to oil and gas platforms," said Leupp.
The expansion is expected to be completed by 2015.
Earlier this year, ABB completed a major upgrade at its Karlskrona facility.
ABB manufactures semiconductors, converters and cables, all key components for HVDC transmission systems.
