Alstom Grid secures utility contract from Svenska Kraftnät in Sweden

Alstom Grid has secured a €240m utility contract from Svenska Kraftnät for the 1,440MW south-west link in Sweden.

The project will link through Barkeryd in central Sweden to Hurva and use high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology

Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will supply HVDC converter stations at both ends, as well as control and protection, converter transformers, switch-yard equipment, construction and project management.

In addition, the transmission project will also use Alstom Grid's HVDC MaxSine voltage source converter (VSC) technology.

Work on the link project is expected to be completed at the end of 2014.

Alstom Grid president Grégoire Poux-Guillaume said the HVDC VSC project represents a major step forward in Alstom's long-term ambitions.

"It reinforces our position as a major manufacturer in the HVDC market and supports our commitment to provide turnkey solutions to our customers, based on the latest technologies" said Poux-Guillaume.

Svenska Kraftnät is one of the most advanced utilities around the world in terms of HVDC integration.

The main Alstom units involved in the project will be the HVDC Center of Excellence in Stafford in the UK, Västerås unit in Sweden for sites activities; and the French unit in Paris for overall project management and engineering.

Recently, Alstom has secured a contract worth €400m to construct a 728MW gas-fired power plant in Iraq.

The group's high voltage valve and control technology have been used for HVDC transmission schemes worldwide, from Ningdong-Shandong, the highest rated 660kV scheme in China, to the Rio Madeira project in Brazil, which has the world's longest HVDC link.

Alstom is a prominent global provider of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure.
