Alstom secures wind turbines order for Wild Rose projects in Canada

Alstom has signed a €420m contract to install up to 414MW capacity of wind turbines to NaturEner Energy Canada's Wild Rose projects in Alberta.

Under the deal, Alstom will supply 138 of its ECO 110 3MW turbines to the Wild Rose 1 and Wild Rose 2 wind farms, which will be built in Cypress County. Alstom will also provide maintenance services for ten years.

“After having successfully built 399MW in the United States, the Wild Rose projects will add up to 414MW to NaturEner's operating assets, solidifying NaturEner as a robust renewable energy platform in North America."

Each of the 3MW turbines will feature a rotor diameter of 110m and Alstom will assemble the nacelles in its factories located in Amarillo, Texas, and Bunuel, Spain.

The project will be completed in two phases, with Wild Rose 1 scheduled to enter commercial operations in 2014, while Wild Rose 2 is due to be finished in 2015.

NaturEner North America CEO Jose Sanchez-Seara said: "After having successfully built 399MW in the United States, the Wild Rose projects will add up to 414MW to NaturEner's operating assets, solidifying NaturEner as a robust renewable energy platform in North America," Sanchez-Seara said.

Alstom head of North American Wind business Andy Geissbuehler added: "The combination of Alstom's proven technology and NaturEner's extensive experience in developing renewable energy projects will enable us to provide an efficient and reliable technology solution that takes full advantage of the strong wind profile of these sites."

Alberta currently has 1,117MW of installed wind capacity, which represents about 8% of the province's total installed generation.

It is expected that an additional 2,000MW of wind power could be developed in southern Alberta over the next decade.
