France-based Alstom has signed a €400m contract with Iraq's Vice-Minister of Electricity to build a 728MW gas-fired power plant in the Diyala Governorate, north-east of Baghdad.
The Al Mansuriya plant will consist of four units, based on Alstom's GT13E2 gas turbine, and will be constructed under a turnkey contract, covering equipment delivery and civil works.
Equipment will be manufactured at Alstom's factories in France, Switzerland and Germany.
Mark Coxon, senior vice-president of Alstom's gas business, said that the company was pleased to participate in the reconstruction of Iraq's energy infrastructure.
"I am positive that our superior gas turbine technology, offering outstanding availability and reliability, will support the country in building up secure electricity supplies for the future," said Coxon.
The plant will provide enough electricity for the entire Diyala Governorate and part of Baghdad, which is 80km away.
The plant's first unit is scheduled to be operational in early 2013.
Alstom and Iraq previously signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the development and modernisation of Iraq's electricity infrastructure in July 2010.
As part of this agreement, Alstom is currently rehabilitating a unit of the Najaf gas-fired power station, 160km south of Baghdad.
