Diamonds from Italy – Fincantieri uses MaK power plant
for four new cruise vessels
Hamburg, Germany – in March 2006, Italian shipyard
Fincantieri ordered a ship set comprising 4x MaK 12 M 43 C
and 2x MaK 8 M 43 C marine engines to power the new
“Signature Class” vessel being built for Carnival brand
Holland America Line (HAL). In the meantime, it has been
decided to name the ship “Eurodam” and Fincantieri has
clinched contracts for another three vessels with the same
engine configuration.
The initial contract included options for two repeat orders.
These ship sets were confirmed in late 2006 and will power
two newbuildings for Carnival brand Costa Crociere. Both
vessels will be of 92,700 GT and carry 2,260 passengers.
Delivery of the first ship, “Costa Luminosa”, will be in spring
2009 while the second is due for delivery in spring 2010. In
July 2007, Fincantieri placed a fourth order for this engine
configuration. It is destined for Holland America Line’s
second 86,000 GT “Signature Class” vessel.
All four newbuildings will use a diesel-electric setup with 4x
MaK 12 M 43 C and 2x MaK 8 M 43 C providing 64,000 kW
each. The six diesel engines will drive AC generators to
deliver the energy needed for the onboard facilities, all the
auxiliary systems and the Azipod propulsion technology which
actually propels the vessels. Every M 43 C engine will have
the proprietary Flexible Camshaft Technology (FCT) which
means no visible smoke at all loads.
Earlier in 2007, Fincantieri also delivered the explorer ship
“Fram” to Hurtigruten in Norway. Built to accommodate 400
passengers, this 144 metre, 12,700 GT vessel is designed for
expedition voyages into the polar regions. Four MaK 6 M 25
marine engines provide 7,920 kW of reliable power to navigate
even in Arctic waters. Several other ships in the Hurtigruten
fleet of comfortable cruise ferries also rely on MaK marine
power.
Leif Gross, Sales Director Global Cruise Projects with
Caterpillar Marine Power Systems, said: “We have established
an excellent business relationship with global cruise giant
Carnival and their subsidiaries AIDA Cruises, HAL and
Costa Crociere. Even more importantly, delivering MaK M 43
C marine engines to Finacantieri also means that we can now
call all the big yards involved in cruise vessel construction our
customers”
