CNOOC starts works to expand Hengmen power plant to 2,300 MW by 2013


China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), China's largest offshore oil and gas company, has started construction works to expand the capacity of the gas-fired Hengmen power plant to 2,300 MW by the end of 2013.

Upon completion of the expansion, the Hengmen power plant will be the largest gas-fired power plant in China, CNOOC said.

Investment required to carry out expansions works at the plant are estimated to total 4.5 billion yuan renmimbi (US$ 0.711231 billion).

The Hengmen plant, located in Zhongshan City in South China's Guangdong province, is operated by a Zhongshan Jiaming Electric Power, a joint venture (JV) controlled by the CNOOC Gas and Power Group.

Zhongshan Jiaming Electric Power is currently in the process of building three 390 MW gas-steam combined cycle cogeneration power generation units with a view to expanding capacity at the plant.

CNOOC Gas and Power Group took a controlling stake of 52.7% stake in Zhongshan Jiaming Electric Power in 1994.
