Details :

Austal commenced operations in 1988 with a vision to build high quality commercial vessels for the international market. By the company's fifth anniversary, Austal had become the world's leading manufacturer of 40 metre passenger catamarans and the dominant supplier to Asia. In 1998 Austal entered the patrol boat market securing an order for eight Bay Class vessels for the Australian Customs Service. In 2001, Austal became the first company to supply the US military with a high speed vessel, the Theatre Support Vessel.

With shipyards in Australia and the United States of America, Austal is well placed to meet the requirements of the global market. In Western Australia, Austal's modern shipyard's are situated on the Jervoise Bay waterfront in Henderson , 8 km south of the port city of Fremantle. Purpose built enclosed facilities cater for simultaneous construction of vessels of varying sizes.

Austal's yard in Mobile, Alabama, established in partnership with Bender Shipbuilding & Repair, delivers a new dimension in high-speed marine transport, utilising the company's leading edge technology and design capabilities, not previously available to US customers. A comprehensive assembly hall 110 metres (360 feet) x 28 metres (93 feet) and the waterfront location on the banks of the Mobile River allows for considerable expansion in the near term. A facility expansion in staged increments will make use of the entire shipyard and will be operational in 2005. This will provide buildings in which to construct and assemble multi-hull vessels up to 130 metres in length. Aluminum and steel is cut on a laser cutter - the first of its type in such a shipyard in the USA . The Austal quality culture is embodied through significant inter-site transfer between the Mobile yard and the headquarters in Western Australia.
