DEWA CEO: 71% of power generated will be from gas

Gas will remain the main source of power generation in Dubai in the next 30 years, according to Saeed Mohammed al-Tayer, vice chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD and CEO of Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA).

“Our main source for power generation over the next 30 years will be gas with 71% of power generated, 5% will be renewable, 12% of power generated will be from nuclear energy,” al-Tayer said.

Al-Tayer said that the solar park that his company is developing will be operation by 2013.

DEWA's future investment projects will be based mainly on distribution and grid linkage. “We aim to invest US$3.67 billion on water and electricity projects related to transport, distribution and linkage,” he said. "We won't invest in further power generation projects in the near future, as the on-going ones will meet the demand."

The company expects annual average growth of water and electricity consumption of 4%. “Energy average consumption growth will be at 5% and water will be 6%,” he noted.

As regard to consumption per sector, al-Tayer said that commercial consumers represents 25% of DEWA customers, while residential represents 73%. “Consumption growth in 2011 from commercial customer increased 46% compared to 27.1% from residential.”
