Turku Repair Yard has finished emergency repair of the tanker Kyeema Spirit.
The tanker arrived to the shipyard on September 29 for the repair of damage caused during the storm when the vessel ran aground near Aegna Island. After vessel’s arrival, the repair crew carried out all necessary preparation procedures (including removal and disposal of fuel, oils and bilge water), and on October 7 the repair works in the dock began.
In the course of repair, the shipyard’s specialists replaced 72 tons of metal, repaired all rooms damaged by water and checked on all main cargo pumps of the vessel. As the damage was mainly caused to the engine room below the main engine and the shaft line, as well as the rooms below main cargo pump section, the repair was carried out in several stages. The works also included removing and fixing back dry-docking keel blocks in accordance with the technology approved by the DNV inspection. The specialists specifically focused on keeping the existing location of the mechanisms unchanged. The precise execution of the procedures of technology, as well as considerable increase in the volume of works slowed down the execution of activities. Nevertheless, the Turku Repair Yard’s specialists delivered the vessel on time.
The customer had announced the invitation to tender to find the best shipyard to repair the vessel. Several shipyards took part in the competition. The crucial factor that determined the winner was the reputation of the shipyard as a reliable partner able to repair vessels in the shortest deadlines and able to guarantee the good quality of the works. For example, this winter, the shipyard carried out an emergency repair of the vessel Stadiongraht belonging to the company Spliethoff (Holland). 130 tons of metal was replaced on Stadiongraht in the area where damage had been caused.
