First Sponson Arrives at Concordia Wreck, Ready for Installation

The first of 19 sponsons to be installed on the Concordia wreck before the refloating phase arrived on Saturday morning at the Giglio Island on board a pontoon named Mak.

This is the S13 and it will be positioned on the starboard side of the ship.

The 810- ton sponson is 33.5 meters wide and covers 11.5 in height. Combined with elecricatal-pneumatic systems and strand jacks, the height of the sponson reaches more than 20 meters – and 10.5 meters in depth.

It will be positioned as soon as the operation becomes authorized.

Of the 19 planned sponsons, 15 are to be installed on the starboard side, and the remaining 4 on the port side.

The installation of the sponsons, a weather sensitive operation, was planned to start this month.

Technicians are working on the reconditioning of the starboard side to create a flat and even surface in correspondence of the damaged areas to allow sponsons to be properly aligned.
