What is FSRU ?

FSRU stands for Floating Storage and Regasification Unit. It is a type of vessel used in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. FSRUs are designed to receive, store, and regasify LNG before delivering it as natural gas to onshore facilities or directly to consumers through pipelines.

Here are some key features and functions of FSRUs:

  1. Floating Platform: FSRUs are floating structures, which means they can be moored at various locations without the need for expensive and permanent onshore infrastructure.

  2. Storage: FSRUs have onboard storage tanks to hold LNG. These tanks are designed to keep the LNG at very low temperatures to maintain it in its liquid state.

  3. Regasification: FSRUs are equipped with regasification facilities that convert LNG back into natural gas. This is achieved by warming the LNG to return it to its gaseous state before it is sent ashore through pipelines.

  4. Flexibility: FSRUs provide flexibility in LNG supply chains by allowing for temporary or mobile infrastructure. They can be moved to different locations based on demand or changing market conditions.

  5. Cost-Effective: Compared to building land-based LNG terminals, FSRUs can offer cost savings and faster deployment times, especially in regions where developing traditional onshore facilities might be challenging or costly.

FSRUs play a crucial role in the global LNG trade, helping to expand access to natural gas in various parts of the world and contributing to energy security and diversification efforts.
