Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant remains stable, despite a 5.5 magnitude offshore earthquake hitting the surrounding area today, according to operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).
A TEPCO spokesman said that no new abnormality was seen at the facility.
The offshore quake hit the area at a depth of 30.2km, according to the US Geological Survey.
Work is underway to bring the facility's reactors to a cold shutdown by the end of this year, reports The Herald Sun.
On 11 March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit Japan, triggering a tsunami that crippled the plant's cooling systems, causing meltdowns in some of its reactors.
The latest earthquake is not expected to trigger a tsunami.
