India: Pipavav Shipyard Launches Two 74.500 DWT Panamax Bulk Carriers



Pipavav Shipyard has launched two Panamax bulk carriers, each of 74,500 DWT for the Golden Ocean group client. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mr Mohan Das secretary shipping said that it is the vision of the Government of India to have a mega shipyard each on the east coast and the west coast of the country and the same has been achieved on the west coast with Pipavav Shipyard, which he described as a national asset, being fully operational.


Mr S Hajara CMD of Shipping Corporation of India said that India’s share in global shipbuilding can be raised from the current 1% to the 5% level with this kind of mega and modern facilities.

SembCorp Marine, Singapore and Komac of Korea played crucial roles in this endeavor. SembCorp Marine has a technical assistance agreement with Pipavav Shipyard and is also its shareholders. Komac have provided the designs for the Bulk carriers and have assisted in the engineering.
