Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran Dian Wirengjurit said in Tehran on Monday that his country will continue buying Iranian oil and disregard unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
In an interview with the IRNA News Agency, the official said that sanctions against Iran will [negatively] affect many countries, directly or indirectly.
He lauded Iran’s achievements in different scientific fields, especially in water, power and road sectors, saying that Indonesia should benefit from Iranian expertise and experience in these fields.
The ambassador put the last year’s trade between the two countries at around $1.8 billion, emphasizing the need to boost the two-way trade taking advantage of capacities of the two sides.
In a meeting with Iranian Majlis speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on July 31, Wirengjurit said that his country is keen to enhance its cooperation with the Islamic Republic in various spheres and added that an agreement on direct flights between Tehran and Jakarta can help enhance ties.
On July 1, under U.S. pressure, the EU imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran’s oil and banking sectors, which had been approved by the bloc’s foreign ministers on January 23.
In March, the U.S. administration approved new embargoes on Iranian crude that penalize other countries for buying or selling Iran’s oil. The sanctions took effect on June 28.
