An official of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), said, in a press conference, that the IRISL had placed an order for building six container ships and fifteen bulk carriers with Iran Shipbuilding & Offshore Industries Complex Co. (ISOICO). IRISL took delivery of the second container ship from ISOICO last week, despite the sanctions imposed by the US and European countries against Iran.
He also added that IRISL has set up a ship repair company in cooperation with ISOICO its focus being repair works of ocean-going ships. The new company managed to carry out deployment of the second ISOICO-built container ship’s equipment without any need to resort for assistance to foreign companies.
The IRISL’s official went on to say that Iran is in need of a steering document in the domain of shipbuilding and associated industries, adding that it is inevitable to task a dedicated organization to bring all related bodies in shipping industry under a single umbrella. He also called for a greater support of the government and national banks in the form of financial resources intended for promoting shipping industry in the country.
The fleet of IRISL, which is 25th in terms of container capacity on a global scale, carries non-oil cargo around the world.
