Isle of Man launches training course for Chinese shipping company

THE Isle of Man recently launched a custom-made ship superintendent training course for the China LNG Shipping (International) Company Limited based in the Shenzen Province of China.

The programme - based on the successful nine day Isle of Man ship superintendent training programme - was condensed to five days and was adapted to suit the specific training requirements of the company, using their own company data codings and procedures.
The course was initially attended by technical and marine superintendents, technical, fleet and procurement managers, and a health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) superintendent.
For certain modules senior accounts staff also attended. 
With a considerable amount of interest in the course, the next step is to take the course to China again, for another company, as well as into Japan, Nigeria and the UK.
A joint initiative between the Isle of Man Ship Registry, the Isle of Man International Business School (The IBS), Döhle (Isle of Man) and Bernhard Schulte (Isle of Man) and managed by EMCS International Limited, the course is primarily designed for experienced seagoing staff entering into the shore-based world of ship management, whether working for a small ship owner or for one of the larger ship management companies.
Topics covered include insurance, legal issues, budgeting, report writing, dry docking, quality assurance, environmental issues and safety management.
The course is also regularly updated to encompass new legislation and codes of practice.

"Our presenters undertook considerable preparation when adapting their presentations to the needs of this company.
"From the feedback we received, we know that all the superintendents found the course invaluable as well as enjoyable and they will all take something positive away with a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
"This means we have achieved what we set out to do and know that the course can be delivered elsewhere."
Director of the Isle of Man Ship Registry Dick Welsh said: "Now in its sixth year, the course is proving hugely successful and we're delighted to see it being taken further afield.
"Our aim is to provide attendees with the relevant knowledge and practical necessities to work within the sector, as well as keeping them abreast of regulatory changes and legislation.
"This new initiative in delivering tailored courses further afield has been a great success."
Economic Development Minister Allan Bell MHK said: "The wealth of knowledge and experience of those delivering the different modules puts this particular training programme at the top of its category and we are excited to continue working with them to expand and grow the course."
