Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) announced Sunday that it has made great strides in reducing gas emissions from its oil facilities using the most sophisticated environment protection systems.
KNPC's higher management considers environment, staff and society protection as a top priority so it offers all support to initiatives and projects aiming to achieve this goal, particularly those related to cutting gas emissions to its minimum levels, the company said in a press release Sunday.
It added that the recent meeting of the joint committee of the petroleum sector and Kuwait Environment Public Authority highlighted KNPC's great efforts and achievements in this field including the development of Odor Management System (OMS) which proved effective in controlling and eliminating odor.
The five-year OMS includes three major components; leak Detection and Repair, Complaint Recording and Tracking System and Odor stressors identification and control measures.
The statement noted that this system has been developed according to international standards and the US Environmental Protection laws to detect volatile organic compounds in addition to monitoring the greenhouse gases using state-of-the-art technology in this regard.
Since OMS inception in December 2009 until July 2011, emissions have dropped by 750 tons per year and it has played an important role in redressing the potential problems before they occur, the statement said, adding that the system has enormous environmental benefits.
It also highlighted the achievements reached through the use the infrared photography in some environmental projects.
KNPC had contracted with a the leading emission monitoring Belgian company (The Sniffers) to monitor gas emission and leakage in its projects.
This contract is the largest of its kind all over the world and the first in the Middle East region, the statement said.
It quoted Deputy Managing Director for Shuaiba Refinery Ahmad Al-Jimaz as saying the World Refining Association awarded the KNPC last May the prize of the best health, safety and environment practices, which is given to refineries and petrochemical companies that apply the best programs for health and safety and environmental protection in their facilities.
He stressed that the company was keen on upgrading environmental programs and protecting environment inside and outside of its faculties.
