Minister oversees fall of electricity towers in Cairngorms National Park

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Fergus Ewing MSP is visiting the SSE site to oversee the fall of electricity steel towers near Boat of Garten in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.

The work is part of the permanent removal of the transmission line of 132kV linking from Boat of Garten to Tarland in the National Park and upon dismantling, the towers and conductors will be sent for recycling.

SSE director of transmission Ian Funnell said the upgrade of the network in the north of Scotland is necessary to facilitate an increase in the renewable generation and the project aims to facilitate the removal of existing lines completely or their replacement with wooden poles or underground cables.

About 109km of existing overhead transmission lines in the Highland, Perth and Kinross areas will be removed as part of the Beauly Denny project.

The removal of the towers through the park area began in October 2010 at the Lecht and will continue until late next year.
