Suzlon to develop 3,000MW wind capacity in India

Wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government of Andhra Pradesh to develop a wind capacity totaling 3,000MW in the state.

Potential investments of up to Rs180bn ($3.52bn) will be made by the company to develop the wind projects between 2012 and 2016.

Under the terms of the MoU, the state government of Andhra Pradesh will assist Suzlon in obtaining necessary permissions, registrations, approvals and clearances for the development of the facilities.

As a developer, Suzlon will aid in diverting investments into the state through its customers investing in wind power.

The MoU covers the development of new capacity in wind farms across the state, with development planned in various locations that include Tallimadugula, Alankarayanipeta, Gandikota, Vajrakarur and Tirumalayapalli.

Suzlon Group chairman Tulsi Tanti said: "This not only reinforces Andhra Pradesh's position as one of India's emerging markets in wind energy, but also illustrates their commitment to power a low-carbon economy by embracing progressive policies to power rapidly growing economy of the state."

Suzlon said Andhra Pradesh is a key emerging wind market in the country, with medium to low wind sites ideally well-suited to Suzlon's new S9X suite of turbines.
