The Netherlands: Saltwater Engineering Designs New Chase Vessels for Rederij Groen


In the past months Saltwater Engineering designed and engineered two new generation chase vessels for Rederij Groen. In addition to the technical aspects Saltwater also managed the tender process, which was concluded at the Europoort exhibition by awarding the build of both vessels to Maaskant Shipyards, Stellendam.

Considering the fact that these vessels have to operate for long periods in severe adverse weather conditions, a highly specific linesplan was developed for both comfort and efficiency. The operating speed, during seismic chase operations, is mainly about 4 to 5 knots which can result wave slamming and severe pitching of the vessel. Taking this into account the lines have been developed with V-shaped sections in the aft part creating diverting waves and U shaped sections in the forward area aimed to reduce pitching.

The main dimensions of the vessels are: length 37.40m, beam 9.30m, depth 4.60m, fuel oil capacity 200m3 and potable water 35 m3. The vessels have refrigerated and dry storage capability as well as ample space on deck for the stowage of several containers. The Classification of the vessels will be: LRS 100A1, EP, Ice Class 1E, UMS, SCM, IWS, LMC, with a top speed of 14 knots.

The vessels will be delivered in early 2013 and will go directly into charter service for WesternGeco. The chase vessels will be used to support the fleet of WesternGeco seismic survey vessels operating all over the world.
