Owners of the two Turkish power ships, which are providing 232MW of electricity to the national grid from Ibrahim Hyderi Jetty, have acquired an oil tanker to ensure smooth
supply of furnace oil for power generation.
Karadeniz Group the owner of Kaya Bey and Ali Can Bey have acquired oil tanker Enis Bey to carry furnace oil from Port Qasim and Karachi Port Trust to the power ships, said Asad Mehmood, Project Manager Karkey.
Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretim A.S. is the first foreign company to bring in a ship of this size and run it under Pakistani Flag through its subsidiary company in Pakistan, Karpak Private Limited, Mehmood said. The oil tanker has safely anchored at Karachi Port Trust mooring on Sunday at 2 pm for change of flag.
The motorised tanker (MT) Karadeniz Powership Enis Bey will be operating under Pakistani flag. The local ship agent for the oil tanker is Bulk Shipping & Trading (Pvt.) Ltd. Karachi.
The oil tanker’s dead weight tonnage is 6,793 tonnes and it has the capacity to carry 6,500 tonnes of furnace oil. It is fitted with bow thrusters, which ensure extremely good manoeuvrability. This tanker will be a significant support to the power project, Mehmood said.
Initially an oil tanker of a local company was being used for carrying furnace oil to the Turkish power ships.
The said tanker had the capacity to carry only 1000 tonnes of furnace oil, which was not sufficient.
The Karadeniz Group felt the need of the bunkering facility and decided to hire its own oil tanker to work as an oil shuttle for the Turkish power ships, Memood said.
The company has signed an agreement with the Government of Pakistan for five years to provide 232 megawatts of electricity to the national grids. “We are very keen to further enhance development of Pakistan-Turkey relationship and to further strengthen the bilateral ties of Pakistan and Turkey.”
“History is being created in the shipping sector as for the first time private foreign flag carrier will operate under Pakistani flag,” said Tariq Aleem, Managing Director, Bulk Shipping & Trading Pvt. Ltd, the local agents of the vessel.
“We hope that Turkey will carry on this initiative of trust and bring more oil tankers and cargo vessels under Pakistan flag,” Aleem said.
He said that all concerned departments in the shipping sector like the Director General Ports and Shipping, Mercantile Marine Department, Karachi Port and Port Qasim should try and assist the Turkish company as much as possible, so that it creates trust and incentive to our Turkish partners for further bilateral ties.
The operating of a Turkish vessel under Pakistani flag will also give a positive impression to the world where only few vessels of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation carry the national flag and encourage more foreign vessels to operate under Pakistani flag.
