The South Yolotan region of Turkmenistan is the second largest gas field in the world as per the audited figures unveiled by Gaffney, Cline & Associates.
Jim Gillet, the auditor representative, said that the South Yolotan holds around 21.2 Trillion cubic meters of gas. This is only second to the South Pars Field between Iran and Qatar.
Gillet believes that further investigations into the 3000 square kilometres could inflate the figures much higher.
Exploration of the South Yolotan region began in 2009 when the government signed deals worth $9.7 billion amongst various parties, with China being the major investor at $8.1 billion.
This new development could Lead to a corporate race to secure and profit from the huge reserves in Turkmenistan. The government has till now resisted the lobbying of major energy companies.
