The UK Government has selected eight sites to build new power stations near existing nuclear sites by 2025.
The UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry said that about one fourth of the country's generating capacity is due to close by the end of this decade and there is a need to set up new plants.
Hendry also said the UK needs £100bn in investment in electricity generation alone, which is double the investment in energy infrastructure in this decade as was achieved in the last decade, reports bbc.co.uk.
Construction of the nuclear plants will be voted in the parliament as it is resisted by Stop New Nuclear, an alliance of eight groups opposing the plans.
The eight sites are Bradwell, Essex; Hartlepool; Heysham, Lancashire; Hinkley Point, Somerset; Oldbury, Gloucestershire; Sellafield, Cumbria; Sizewell, Suffolk; and Wylfa, Anglesey.
