US Army Launches Task Force for Energy Projects

The US Army has launched a new energy initiatives office (EIO) task force, which will aid in the development of large-scale renewable energy projects for the armed forces.

The task force, which will be fully operational by 15 September this year, will enable the army to address rising energy security challenges, fuel prices and stricter federal mandates.

US secretary of the army John M. McHugh said that through the task force the army will be meet its goal of drawing 25% of power from renewable energy by 2025.

The army requires an estimated investment of $7.1bn over the next decade to generate 2.1 million megawatt hours of power annually.

The new unit will streamline existing acquisition processes and execute large-scale renewable and alternative energy projects on army installations through a strategic and financial industry collaboration.
