The Wärtsilä 50DF applies the same sophisticated dual-fuel technology as in the reliable and well proven Wärtsilä 46 HFO engine.
The engine can be run on either natural gas, light fuel oil (LFO), or heavy fuel oil (HFO), and can smoothly switch between fuels whilst operating. It is designed to give the same output regardless of the fuel.
The Wärtsilä 50DF engine operates on the lean-burn principle. Lean combustion enables a high compression ratio, which in turn increases engine efficiency, reduces peak temperatures, and therefore also reduces NOx emissions.
Both the gas admission and pilot fuel injection are electronically controlled. The engine functions are controlled by an advanced automation system that allows optimal running conditions to be set, independent of the ambient conditions or fuel type.
The Wärtsilä 50DF engine is fully compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention.

Wärtsilä engines are delivered with the UNIC embedded engine management system.
The UNIC system is designed to ensure extended lifetime for large marine diesel and gas engines operating in the toughest of conditions. Special attention has been paid to temperature- and vibration endurance throughout the design, while the highest priority has been given to operational reliability.
Key features of the UNIC system include the engine safety system, local monitoring, speed control with loadsharing, fuel injection- and timing control, knock detection, alarm signal acquisition, start/stop sequencing, load reduction request, system diagnostics, and a fieldbus interface as applicable for each engine configuration.
Thanks to the electronic control, the engine can be adapted to different operating conditions. Furthermore, the pre-tested configuration allows the engine or generating set to be made ready for operation with a minimum of commissioning and installation work.
